How to Calculate Mulch Volume
Determining your exact mulch requirement takes three simple steps: measuring surface area, selecting depth, and accounting for sloped beds or perimeter edge trenching.
Step 1: Measure the Bed Area
Take exact measurements with a tape measure:
- Rectangular beds: Length (ft) × Width (ft) = Area (sq ft).
- Circular tree rings: π × (Radius)² = 3.14159 × (Diameter ÷ 2)².
- Triangular beds: ½ × Base (ft) × Height (ft).
- Irregular beds: Divide the shape into smaller rectangles and triangles, compute each section's area, and sum them together.
That total area is what you enter in the Irregular option on our mulch calculator. For playground projects, see our rubber mulch calculator.
Step 2: Determine Mulch Depth & Slope Factor
Most flower beds require 2 to 3 inches of organic mulch. Use 4 inches if combating severe weed growth, or up to 6 inches for rubber mulch on playground surfaces.
If your bed is on an incline, sloped surface area is larger than flat plan-view dimensions:
Step 3: Convert to Cubic Yards and Bags
Volume (ft³) = Area (ft²) × (Depth in ÷ 12) + Edge Trench Fill
Cubic Yards = Volume (ft³) ÷ 27
2 cu ft Bags = Volume (ft³) ÷ 2
Example: A 10 ft × 20 ft garden bed at 3 inches deep requires 50 ft³, which converts to 1.85 to 2.00 cubic yards of hardwood mulch (including settling allowance), or approximately 27 to 28 bags of 2 cu ft mulch.
